This curious combination of lo-ong nose and lovely fur relates to a raccoon family and inhabit primarily at the South America.

It is interesting fact that coati’s males used to live in solo without creating groups or shoals, opposite to females which are incline to gather into huge groups up to 50 individuals. Who knows what for? Gossip? Sure, they are women)

These groups of females called bands ) They have long muzzles, brown fur and strange ringed furry tail in spite of their habitat mostly in a tropic rain forests. Because of their body building as well as thanks to tail, coati are brilliant tree climbers and what is more interesting they are able to climb down tree (is what cats unable to perform)

Believe it or not, taking into account their impressive teeth, coati’s light diet includes only fruits, worms and vegetables! May be that is exactly a reason of their teeth’s healthy looking )

Being the author of this blog now I do believe that each animal is unique and has something to show to the publicity, each animal is important to Mother-nature and has his or her own destination. Even raccoons, which most people considered to be harmful and dangerous… But, sometimes they can make you laugh (if you, of course, not an owner of the stolen carpet )…

General Information

Raccoon name is derived from the Algonquin word “arakun”, meaning “scratching with hands”. Raccoons live in many parts of the world and they are about 32 inches long together with a tail. They weigh near 33 pounds (the biggest ever recorded raccoon was 60 pounds!) Raccoons live not more than 7-8 years (in wild). But in captivity raccoons can live up to 15 years. As a rule, they prefer eating fish, frogs, birds, nuts, small animals, insects and fruits. They considered to be nocturnal animals, although there were reported cases of their daytime activeness. Adore living in hollows and burrows.

Appearance

A typical raccoon is a mammal with big, even broad head, striped fur coat and fluffy tail. Raccoons have black mask on their faces, the fur is gray, long and coarse. Hands of raccoons are funny with long fingers.

Pets Raccoons

People like exotic pets, raccoons are not exotic in a general understanding of this word, but they are not common pets at all. To tell the truth, any raccoon is curious and amusing, but it is stubborn as well. Also, it has some special tastes, so it is hardly a good idea to make a pet out of a raccoon. They adore eating, breaking expensive tea-services and any raccoon just doesn’t know the word “no”. Be sure, if he wants, it is no use to change the situation, you will fail. While getting older, raccoons become very aggressive and moody. But, be careful, it is impossible to set them free, ’cause raccoons got used to humans, and are not capable of living without them. Most of such raccoons are not afraid of people, so they can hurt them. Some can die from starvation. And there is another awful reason why raccoons can’t be pets – they possess “roundworms” – parasites, which can cause human blindness, provoke damage of central nervous system and even lead to a death.

Funny story

I perfectly understand, that raccoons can be dangerous, aggressive and sometimes it is really impossible to explain their awful behaviour, but to tell the truth, I like them, they are cute, fluffy and pleasant-looking. The following video made me laugh… Just imagine the following situation:

Raccoon Sammy lives near the house of Mr. Smith, who has a dog and a cat. Sammy tried to make friends with Mr. Smith’s animals, but it was all in vain… They are too mean and too greedy. Sammy has even shown his own home to them, but they just laughed at him and kept telling stories about the convenience of pet’s life. Sammy made a small present to dog Calvin, but Calvin still didn’t show any signs of becoming Sammy’s friend. So, a cold autumn was coming and Sammy decided to make his home warmer, he noticed this carpet while his first visit to this house and now it was time to act…
