Origin

Pugs considered to be one of the oldest breeds, due to some reliable resources they have originated before 400 BC in Asia. Although, it is not a commonly-recognized fact. There are some opinions as to the origin of the Pug as well. Some experts believe, pugs came from the Lowlands, and some claim them to be the result of crossing a small Bulldog. And, it is just a beginning, some really think, pugs are miniature form of the rare French Mastiff. Pugs became extremely popular in Victorian times, they were favourite pets at Tibetan monasteries. Later to keep pugs was exceptionally royalty privilege. Josephine, Napoleon’s wife, while in prison used pugs to sent secret messages to her husband. The official recognition by the AKC took place only in 1885.

Appearance

Pugs are very recognizable dogs. They possess compact, stocky  body, with a sleek coat (fawn, apricot, silver, black – possible colours, their muzzle is always black), and short ears. Eyes are very bright and expressive. Tails must be tightly curled, limbs are strong and straight.

Personality

Pugs are perfect watchdogs, they can keep your secrets, and regarded as truly loving, loyal, and affectionate companions. These dogs are very playful and social, clever, and are easily trained (but keep in mind, they are easily bored and are very sensitive, so severe punishments and loud tones are not welcomed). The pug is not a yapper, and it will love other pets, people, and guests. Although, they don’t need your undivided attention, pugs still need at least some portions of it.

Health problems and grooming

Pugs are prone to:

• allergies;
• breathing problems;
• flues;
• eyes’ weeping;
• skin problems;
• sometimes to an inflammation of the brain (mostly between the ages of 2 and 3);
• wheezing and snoring.

They are very easy to groom and take care of. However, the creases on the face MUST be cleaned on a regular basis.
