Being the author of this blog now I do believe that each animal is unique and has something to show to the publicity, each animal is important to Mother-nature and has his or her own destination. Even raccoons, which most people considered to be harmful and dangerous… But, sometimes they can make you laugh (if you, of course, not an owner of the stolen carpet )…

General Information

Raccoon name is derived from the Algonquin word “arakun”, meaning “scratching with hands”. Raccoons live in many parts of the world and they are about 32 inches long together with a tail. They weigh near 33 pounds (the biggest ever recorded raccoon was 60 pounds!) Raccoons live not more than 7-8 years (in wild). But in captivity raccoons can live up to 15 years. As a rule, they prefer eating fish, frogs, birds, nuts, small animals, insects and fruits. They considered to be nocturnal animals, although there were reported cases of their daytime activeness. Adore living in hollows and burrows.

Appearance

A typical raccoon is a mammal with big, even broad head, striped fur coat and fluffy tail. Raccoons have black mask on their faces, the fur is gray, long and coarse. Hands of raccoons are funny with long fingers.

Pets Raccoons

People like exotic pets, raccoons are not exotic in a general understanding of this word, but they are not common pets at all. To tell the truth, any raccoon is curious and amusing, but it is stubborn as well. Also, it has some special tastes, so it is hardly a good idea to make a pet out of a raccoon. They adore eating, breaking expensive tea-services and any raccoon just doesn’t know the word “no”. Be sure, if he wants, it is no use to change the situation, you will fail. While getting older, raccoons become very aggressive and moody. But, be careful, it is impossible to set them free, ’cause raccoons got used to humans, and are not capable of living without them. Most of such raccoons are not afraid of people, so they can hurt them. Some can die from starvation. And there is another awful reason why raccoons can’t be pets – they possess “roundworms” – parasites, which can cause human blindness, provoke damage of central nervous system and even lead to a death.

Funny story

I perfectly understand, that raccoons can be dangerous, aggressive and sometimes it is really impossible to explain their awful behaviour, but to tell the truth, I like them, they are cute, fluffy and pleasant-looking. The following video made me laugh… Just imagine the following situation:

Raccoon Sammy lives near the house of Mr. Smith, who has a dog and a cat. Sammy tried to make friends with Mr. Smith’s animals, but it was all in vain… They are too mean and too greedy. Sammy has even shown his own home to them, but they just laughed at him and kept telling stories about the convenience of pet’s life. Sammy made a small present to dog Calvin, but Calvin still didn’t show any signs of becoming Sammy’s friend. So, a cold autumn was coming and Sammy decided to make his home warmer, he noticed this carpet while his first visit to this house and now it was time to act…

This incredible animal amased me when I was at Indonesia (Bali Island). We were staying there as a tourists. One sunny morning we were invited into so called “Turtle Island” which was totally covered by these turtles and some of them has reached more then 100 years old!

Some of the oceanic giant turtles are described as having enormously long necks, like a sea serpent threaded through a turtle shell. These creatures are often at first mistaken for sea serpents, until witnesses see the attached giant shell.

Turtles have a rigid beak. As you see in this picture turtles use their jaws to cut and chew food. Instead of teeth, the upper and lower jaws of the turtle are covered by horny ridges.
Turtles vary widely in size, although marine turtles tend to be relatively larger animals than their land and freshwater relatives.

The upper shell of the turtle is called the carapace. The lower shell that encases the belly is called the plastron. The carapace and plastron are joined together on the turtle’s sides by bony structures called bridges. The inner layer of a turtle’s shell is made up of about 60 bones that includes portions of the backbone and the ribs, meaning the turtle cannot crawl out of its shell.
Turtles, particularly small terrestrial and freshwater turtles, are quite commonly kept as pets

Tadarida is quiet rare kind of bat! I am sure you have never seen it in a nature conditiona. They have really bit strange looking and hheir dorsal fur is black-grey. Ventral fur is grey or white-grey. Tadarida species are known as dissapearing kinds so I’ve decided to show it to you.

As you see their ears long and broad and project forwards beyond eyes and face. Base of ears touches at front. Tadarida proved to be a late emerger, leaving the roost about one hour after sunset and, in contrast to most insectivorous bat species, only had one foraging bout.

arida was found to be a strong flyer, reaching speeds of over 50 km/h, and flying for up to 10 hours without resting periods. The observed speeds were 2.5 times higher than the predicted maximum range speed, which may be possible due to peculiar adaptations to high-speed flight.

Chameleons are squamates that belong to one of the best-known lizard families. A very impressive ans strange looking creature which could easily change the color of it’s skin. The main things chameleon species do have in common is their foot structure, their eyes, their lack of ears, and their tongue.

Their eyes are the most distinctive among the reptiles. The upper and lower eyelids are joined, with only a pinhole large enough for the pupil to see through. They can rotate and focus separately to observe two different objects simultaneously. It in effect gives them a full 360-degree arc of vision around their body!!!

Chameleons have incredibly long tongues (sometimes longer than their own body length) which they are capable of rapidly and abruptly extending out of the mouth. The tongue whips out faster than our eyes can follow, speeding at 26 body lengths per second. The tongue hits the prey in about 30 thousandths of a second — one tenth of an eye blink. The tongue has a sticky tip on the end, which serves to catch prey items that they would otherwise never be able to reach with their lack of locomotive speed!

Some chameleon species are able to change their skin colour, which has made them one of the most famous lizard families. Changing colour is an expression of the physical and physiological condition of the lizard. The colour also plays an important part in communication.

Despite popular belief, chameleons cannot change colour to their surroundings. Chameleons are naturally coloured for their surroundings as a camouflage ))

This weekend I was walking at the local botanic garden. Among various types of trees and shrubs I’ve seen probably the prettiest and quick-moving wild animal – the squirrel ) When seen her everyone (including me as well) stop and start to photo this little red furry cutie.

The Sciuridae family also include flying squirrels, as well as ground squirrels such as the chipmunks, prairie dogs, and woodchucks.
Ground and tree squirrels are typically diurnal, while flying squirrels tend to be nocturnal — except for lactating flying squirrels and their offspring, who have a period of diurnality during the summer.
Squirrels are generally clever and persistent animals. In residential neighborhoods they are notorious for eating out of bird feeders, digging in potted plants either to bury or recover seeds, and for inhabiting sheltered areas including attics

Squirrels can be trained to be hand-fed. Because they are able to cache surplus food, they will take as much food as is available.
Like other rodents, the species in the squirrel family have four large incisor teeth (an upper and a lower pair) for gnawing. These teeth grow throughout the life of the animal. Some species have cheek pouches where they can temporarily hold food, such as grain, and then deposit it later for storage in a nest or burrow. The tree squirrels bury nuts in the ground for later consumption. Many of these nuts are never found, and the dispersal of many plant species is an indirect consequence: the uneaten seeds and nuts germinate and grow into new plants.

For the first time, I even didn’t realized where his or may be her head is. You see, I have mistaken two completely different parts of the body! I have never seen something like that. This pangolin looks like a big hedgehog, but without needles. I don’t know for sure, but I think is is wearing an armour or a shell. I even don’t know whether it is possible to say that it is cute, may be pangolins are dangerous. I just liked this video and decided to enjoy it, the whole info I will find tomorrow. The only one thing – the location is the Kalahari.

Tarsiers, probably one of the most interesting animals in the world. They are exotic, funny and so small. Latin name is ‘Tarsius Syrichta’. They eat mostly insects, tarsiers grow up to 160 mm and weigh up to 165 grams. They can’t be mistaken with other animals and small primates because of a very peculiar appearance. Tarsiers possess large eyes and feet. They got such a strange name exactly because of the extended tarsus bones. These animals are perfect hunters because of large eyes and ears. They lead a night style of life. Oh, no! It doesn’t mean that they go to discos or participate in hot dancing nights, they are hunting and at day time they are mostly sleeping. Tarsiers’ vision is extremely acute and they can catch insects and even birds by jumping either from one branch to another or from one tree to another. Sometimes, tarsiers can hunt even snakes. Moreover, tarsiers’ neck can turn 180 degrees. As a rule, tarsiers live on trees and they are of gray colour. Tarsiers possess a naked tale (unlike many other animals).

Tarsiers still live in some parts of Philippines and in Indonesia. If to believe to the statistic data, there are only between 5,000 and 10,000 tarsiers in the whole world. And, unfortunately, the predictions are not pessimistic. Because of their beauty and funny appearance people begin to breed tarsiers in captivity, and they DO NOT live like that, there are some cases when tarsiers even commit suicides, because captivity is a great stress for them. It is awful, when such a funny and cheerful animal can bang its head on something like a cage. Another reason for their number reduction is the destruction of Rain Forests. Also, the representatives from Japan and Mexico like to buy unusual pets, as tarsiers and they adore buying them for nothing – only 100 pesos (£1.50) for a tarsier. But, officially a tarsier CAN NOT be kept in captivity and CAN NOT be bought at the Philippines!

Communication of tarsiers is a very interesting topic to be viewed. Young tarsiers communicate mostly with a help of distress calls. They use such a call, only when separated from mothers. One mother can give a birth only to a one tarsier (while a pregnancy!)

Please, remember, tarsiers are beautiful and sensitive, it is no use to take them home. We have to live them alone, because they adore living with their relatives in natural conditions. Don’t provoke a depression of this cute animal!

Good afternoon, my dear readers. I am back again to make your mood better with the next great bird of our Planet, which is worth to be shown as a curious one. The Pelican!
Pelicans are large birds with enormous, pouched bills from which hangs a distensible pouch of skin for catching and holding fish, and long wings. Of course there are a various species of pelicanes from very small till giant ones.

Pelican is a fishing community but in one documented case, a pelican swallowed a live pigeon, and reports of similar incidents have surfaced. In fact, Pelicans are fairly opportunistic predators, and while fish forms the bulk of their diet due to being the most common food source where Pelicans nest, they will quite readily eat any other food that is available to them.

The famous limerick about pelicans: “A wonderful bird is the pelican. His bill will hold more than his belican. He can take in his beak, Food enough for a week, But I’m damned if I can see how the helican.” was written by Dixon Lanier Merritt in 1910.
