red crab annual migration

Every year red crabs “go crazy” and began their migration on Christmas Island. This event considered to be one of the amazing event of the year. Very often they  cross the roads, crabs are everywhere: on the streets, in the boots and bags, they are climbing the walls and successfully overcome the whole hurdles on their way from forests to water. Annually more than 150 million red crabs migrates in order breed and release eggs into the water. The migration itself lasts up to 20 days. The period of eggs laying and breeding is spent in moist burrows and then, young generation of crabs, called megalopae (they are not more than 5 mm across) began another migration, this time from water to forests. They look like an alive red carpet.

Unfortunately, a lot of crabs die!
