The jaguar animal (or Panthera Onca) considered to be one of the most amazing and beautiful rainforest animals. What is more, jaguars are the largest of South America’s big cats.

Over the years it was incredibly difficult and almost impossible to access jaguar in its natural habitats. But, thanks to new technologies, everything is possible and now we know:

Jaguar’s Habitat

Jaguars live in biodiversity-rich regions and they are native to of Central and South America. Their main places of living are forest and areas close to water sources. Jaguars are capable swimmers, and they can swim so fast that they make bow waves. But they prefer living in sheltered areas, far from people. But if you happen to see a jaguar in the wild, you are a lucky dog, this impression will last forever. Jaguars are gracious, beautiful and so dangerous. Very often jaguars are called jungle cats.

Appearance

As a rule, the jaguar is approximately 6 feet long, and weighs nearly 250 p, it has a muscular and strong body and stout legs. Paws are more than powerful. Coats of leopards are bright, thick and got a lot of spots. Most jaguars are orange or tan and get very distinctive spots. Average lifespan in the wild: 12 to 15 years.

Jaguar Animal as a Hunter

The jaguar is a nocturnal animal, so it hunts mostly during the dark hours of the day.Jaguars eat exceptionally meat (that is, other animals! and fish!). They are very intelligent.

Threats

The first and the most dangerous threat is PEOPLE! Yeah, a lot of us adore wearing luxurious leopard coats, so poaching flourishes.

Sad to say it, but Californian condors – these rarest birds of prey, were on the brink of extinction, and Thanks God, now are on the brink of… recovery. Unfortunately, previously there were only 22 condors left in existence, and nowadays their number has risen up to 289 species.

Condors as nature’s cleanup crew

It is not a secret, that California condors are vultures, so they feed on carrion. It may seem mean, but they actually, perform the function of cleaning, condors are part of nature’s cleanup crew. Otherwise, things could get too messy! They prefer “eating” large dead animals. Most people will be surprised, but they see their prey and almost never smell it. Condors can stay without food for several days.

One more cleaning

Most people think of vultures as “very dirty,” birds, but everything is right on the contrary. Californian condors are very neat. Right after each eating, they start cleaning their heads and other parts of bodies by rubbing them on grass, branches and even rocks. Condors can bathe. And the most amazing fact, Condors have a special immune system, and they don’t get sick from any of the bacteria they can come across while eating. Californian condors are highly social birds, most their time, Condors spend together.

Risks

Loss of habitat;

Many birds die on power lines;

Perish on poisoned carcasses.

It is our aim to take care of condors and help them to survive.

Those who afraid of all these insects and even butterflies and those, who like them, please, pay attention – the largest butterfly in the world Queen Alexandra’s Birdwing with a wingspan of 10 inches (approximately 30 cm) and weight near 12 grams and even more.

If you really have an intention to see this butterfly with your own eyes, you are welcome to visit New Guinea, it lives only in a few valleys not far from Popondetta (rainforests) and regarded as an endangered species on the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species.

Queen Alexandra’s Birdwing such a strange and honourable name was given after Queen Alexandra, to Europe this butterfly was introduced in 1906.

As a rule, female butterflies are bigger than male ones. But male species are brighter and more colourful. One very interesting peculiarity: caterpillars of these butterflies adore eating te pipevine plant and it is a toxic one, so the butterfly is toxic to predators and they prefer not to touch it.

These butterflies are real wonders of the world, but they are endangered not only because such processes as deforestation and destruction of habitat, there are a lot of butterflies’ collectors and nothing will stop them from getting such a species, although their collecting is prohibited by the law.

Do you enjoy water, fun, great company, swimming and diving? Then, Giant Otters will perfectly understand you! These animals are extremely curious, they are always ready to play and have some fun, shock people and prefer living in a group with ten or more otters.

Giant Otters are native to South America (mainly in Iwokrama Forest, live in large rivers and tropical rain forests). These otters are the biggest and the rarest among all otters, they can grow as long as a rather tall man, but their weight is poor (approximately 70 pounds), that is why these animals are so sleek. These rare creatures are commonly called “water dogs”, “river wolves” and they live in very remote and forested regions far from people. I think, it is a real pleasure, to watch them diving and playing with their shiny wet fur glistening in the sunlight. Ears and eyes possess such a form in order to prevent them from water.

Now, the most exciting facts!!! Fur of the otter is waterproof. They possess incredible webbed feet and long tails. Otters are very vocal and noisy animals. There is a light spot on the throat area. Giant otters need not less than ten pounds of food each day and they never save it for the rainy day. Otters are capable hunters and should the opportunity present itself, they will never miss it. Beware! As a rule, Giant Otters live nearly 12 years in the wild, and in the zoo they live up to 20-21 years.

Main threats

the hunt for their luxurious fur;

the shrinking of their habitat;

poisoning because of polluted waterways;

destruction of the rain forests;

fishing;

jaguars and anacondas.

Tigers… I’ve always wanted to have one. They seem so cute (especially, when they are young) and inoffensive. But, now (because I am not a child anymore) I perfectly understand, that these beautiful and powerful animals are dangerous, but they still need our help, our protection. Unfortunately, nowadays, tigers are an endangered species. Earlier, there were 8 species of tigers and now 3 of them are extinct and 5 are endangered.

Tigers are predators and the largest feline species in our world. Also, they are the heaviest cats in the wild. In general, tigers’ length is from 2 m to 4 m and their weight – 306 kg. Tigers have bright reddish fur coats and black or brown stripes (as a rule, tigers have approximately 100 stripes). They make tigers so recognizable! It is interesting, but pattern of stripes is unique to each tiger, the same as fingerprints to a person. For most of us the Bengal Tiger, is a typical representative of all tigers and namely its image we imagine while speaking about tigers, ’cause they constitute nearly 80% of the entire tiger population. Tigers live in India, Bhutan, Bangladesh, China, Russia (the Siberian tiger is capable of surviving in extremely cold areas!), Thailand, Indonesian, Laos etc.

The word “tiger” comes from the Greek “tigris” and means an “arrow”, because of their amazing reaction and speed. Present day tigers are strong swimmers, they prefer swimming in ponds, rivers and lakes.

Unfortunately, tigers are haunted for their fur, bones of tigers are used in Chinese traditional medicine, for example in pain killers. But, it was banned. Very often tigers are called men-killers and sometimes, these things really happen. As a rule, only injured or very old tigers attack people. A tiger that killed a person will be killed or poisoned.

By the way, in a poll from Animal Planet, tigers were named World’s Favourite Animal, tigers got 10 904 votes, 17 votes more than dogs. More and more people keep or want to keep tigers as pets. A tiger is a potential danger. Most people don’t understand that keeping a tiger as a pet is almost unrealistic fantasy – give the wolf the best food, but he would hanker for the wood.

There are incredible white tigers, they are just a mutation, but a very beautiful one, yeah?

On the 12th of November, sun bears were given a status of Vulnerable animals. There are 8 kinds of these bears and 6 of them are under the threat of extinction. These bears can be found in places ranging from the eastern Himalayas to China, also in some parts of Indochina and the Malayan peninsula. Their favourite places of living are tropical forests.

Sun bears are called so because of a white to orange spot right in the middle of the chest. The coat of sun bears is black, very glossy and sleek. This spot has the form of sun-rising. Sun-bear considered to be the smallest of all the existing bear species (from 1.2 to 1.5 m from head to tail). This bear has rather long paws with sharp claws and palms allowing it to climb. Tail is not big at all. These bears have a funny peculiarity – they walk on the whole foot – it looks so unusual! Sun bears are perfect tree-climbers, they adore sleeping on trees. Also, these bears are nocturnal animals. Sun bears possess long tails, making them capable to catch food on distances. They traditionally eat termites, bees, earthworms and even fruits. But, when occasion offers they can happily eat small rodents and lizards. In some areas, sun bears are reported to damage crops.

Threats:

number of sun bears is constantly goes down. So, the first reason is deforestation of their natural place of living;

hunting (these bears are hunted for sport, fur, meat and gall bladder, that is popular for improving health). Malayan sun bears are hunted for bile and paws;

young bears are sold as pets (as they are considered to be small and non-aggressive to people).
