These funny birds were called in such a way, not only because their mouths look like shoes, but because they have their size as well. BTW, shoebills have the largest bill among the rest of birds. What is more, these species reach 1,5 m (height).
Although these birds belong to one of the most fascinating creatures, we and scientists don’t know a lot about them. Shoebills are native to East African swamp regions, so people are not welcomed there. But, what scientist know for sure, these creatures are very patient, they can’t stand motionless in water for hours while waiting for their pray. Birds lead solitary lives.
I still can’t believe, these birds are almost of my size and we didn’t know much about them. It’s not fair.

I first saw this bird as an illustration in “Alice in wonderland” and I thought it was a mythical creature.
Later on I found out that these animals really existed and I adored them because they are … somewhat … UNIQUE.
