Sphynx Cats: While Looking for a Rare Cat

Frankly speaking, one of the most unusual breeds in our world. They are cats without fur and look like guests from another planet. Most breeders describe them as part child, part monkey, some will say they look as Gremlins. I am talking about a rather rare cat breed – Sphynx cats.

Appearance

Sphynx  regarded to be hairless cats, but, actually, it’s not true. They do have an almost invisible fur. And on the ears, tail, muzzle and feet short and soft hair is allowed.  It’s an amazing feeling to touch a Sphynx cat, it is so warm. Eyes are big, ears are full, possesses a tail of a rat. Bodies are not big but muscular with broad chest. As a rule, skin is wrinkled and paw pads are very thick, thus, a cat looks like an acrobat. Skin of Sphynx cats comes in a variety of colours.

Personality

Many men, many minds. Many cats, many personalities. They are so versatile. In general, they are described as intelligent, extrovert, very playful, people oriented, active and loving. But some adore loneliness and stay in a solitude most of the day. Some adore being the center of attention. Almost all easily make friends with other pets, as well as children and guests.

Grooming

First of all, please, remember, Sphynx cats can’t stand cold weather conditions and sudden changes in temperature. It goes without saying, that these cats don’t need brushing, but they require regular bathing, to prevent oil build-up on the skin and a sticky film afterwards. Ears and areas near nails need regular and thorough cleaning.

I really enjoyed reading about these unusual cats. I don’t know if I think they are cute or too strange for my taste. Where were they first bred? How popular are these cats? Can’t be too many breeders around.
I love your site and will return.
Have you posted about Scottish Folds yet?
    Happy day

2 Holy: Yeah, you are perfectly right!
2 Chris: The same with me. But they are really cool.

Wow, these are really quite different to other cats. They look a little scary, but distinctive! Does this remind anybody of that episode of ‘Friends’ when Rachel bought a strange looking cat and she had to sell it (I forget why)?

We have 2 of these cats. They require a lot of maintainence. Bathing, wiping, grooming, discipline, etc… They are actually quite disgusting, robust little creatures. Are they worth it? YES! They are adorable, affectionate, entertaining, little monsters that will fart and play their way into your heart.

I have recently been given a Sphynx cat by a negligent neighbor who had 2 Sphynx, 11 other cats, and two dogs. I have been trying to do as much possible research on them. I understand the bathing they require, in the importance of keeping them inside, but why do they FART soooo much? Can anyone tell me?

They have very sensitive digestive systems. If you feed them high end food like Iam’s and raw hamburg, it will help. The hamburg is key as they need a high protein diet. If you change their diet you will notice serious problems with loose bowls and farting. Yes their farts stink horribly.

We now have 3 of these. Even if you think they are kinda ugly at first you will fall in love and think they are beautiful in no time. Their personalities will do this for you. I like to say that they are so ugly, their cute.

The youngest of the 3 likes to be cradled in your arms under the covers at bedtime. Then he tries to put both paws around you in a bear hug and cuddles up to go to sleep with his face resting on your belly. The hallways in our house are now quite dangerous for humans to be walking through as the cats think of them as their personal race track. I would love to time them and see what speeds they are reaching.

I’ve had two sphynx cats for five years and they are my buddies. They are loving and act just like any other cat because they are cats!! I got them because of allergies to cats that my family has and although they are not completely allergen free cats, they do reduce the amount of allergen because of their hairlessness. I’ve built a tolerance to cat allergens having them around and now I can tolerate hairy cats.

Get them used to being groomed and bathed the way you want as soon as possible. Bath time around here with 3 of them can be quite an ordeal. Do not pick them up and cuddle if you are wearing good clothing, especially light colours. Change all your furniture and bedding to dark colours or patterns. Do not spend money on expensive, breakable, decorations for your house. Do not leave small items lying around to be stolen or played with. Buy baby wipes in bulk. You will need lot’s of them. Get used to living with the equivalant of flying circus monkeys. If you can handle all this, you will be fine.
