Husky are nice, big dogs with striking blue or brown eyes. Siberian husky dogs are very energetic and active as they were bred to work and born to run. If a husky is independent, it loves people.
Appearance
Husky dogs are of a medium size (from 20 to 24 inches tall), their weight ranges from 35 to 65 pounds. Siberian huskies look like real wolves but with stunning, bright blue or brown eyes. Ears are prick. Bodies of huskies are massive and athletic with a thick coat (it consists of 2 layers: in spring they lose most of the undercoat). Colours of coat is mostly black and white, or silver and white.
Temperament
As a rule, huskies are: independent, clever, vocal, stubborn, friendly to most people, impulsive, loving, neat.
Grooming
Any husky dog must be groomed once a week, thus, you’ll remove all dirt and other unnecessary things. When huskies are shedding it’s better to brush them more often.
You can’t own husky IF:
- you have small children, cats or dogs – huskies can be aggressive to them;
- you live in an apartment or a small house without a yard – huskies adore running, playing, roaming, otherwise, they can run away or express their energy in a very bad way;
- you are looking for a watchdog – huskies are big, but not reliable in these cases of emergency;
- you are dreaming about a quiet dog – Siberian huskies don’t bark a lot, but they adore yelping and howling, like most wolves.
There are numerous movies about these unusual dogs: Snowdogs, Kevin of the North, Balto, White Fang, The Call of the Wild, Eight Below, Born to Run: The Iditarod Sled Dog Race. Huskies are real movie-stars. And there is a great variety of books as well: Husky in a hut, Siberian Huskies 2008 Calendar, Siberian Huskies for Dummies and other.

What if you raised a Husky with another breed of dog like a Greenland Dog or a Finnish Lapphund or others from puppyhood? Wouldn’t the Huskey then be friendly to dogs? Because how else can they pull sleds if they’re not fond of other dogs? And I (personnally) have been dog-sledding when I was roughly 14 I’m thinking. And pretty much still a child. =) I was able to walk up to these very friendly dogs and pet them even hug them…. So I’d think if you socialize them with both other dogs and children when puppies and when they’re in their early adolecent ages they’d be very good dogs to have in a family or a pack of dogs. But that’s my personnal opinion
No offence meant in any way here I hope =)
Sincerely,
Andrea Fornetti =)
Ive had a husky for a while now and i raised it around a shitzu. They’re the bestest friends. Not to mention I have twin brothers who are six and ride and tackle her all day. She’s never bitten them, in fact she makes a game out if it and plays tag. I’m sure there are exceptions to the no small dogs or children rule depending on how you raise the pup.
Thanks for your comment )))

THESE HUSKIES ARE SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO CUTE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I think by “not friendly” people mean they are very hierarchy-minded. But all dogs are, they all must establish who is on top. Huskies are just more adamant about it.
i have a husky he is 3 1/2 mo old he wants to bite all the time will he grow out of this
My pup did that when I first got her but I kept smacking her mouth softly and telling her don’t bite. Eventually she learned what no bite meant and I don’t have this problem. They’re really intelligent animals they can just be stubborn. Make sure you don’t let them have exceptions or else they get confused at if they can or can’t do it.
Stanley- your husky is a puppy and teething. Yes, he should grow out of it, but try the following to train him:
-When he bites you, yelp like another dog very loudly and turn your back to him, stopping play immediately. When he calms down, the you can initiate play. This is how his litter mates would have taught him that teeth are sharp and hurt.
-Everytime he gets mouthy, also try giving a firm “No!” and replacing your hand in his mouth with a toy or bone that is acceptable to chew.
Read up on training. It will help. Most issues don’t just “go away.” You have to put a little work into them.
i have a male husky he is a yr old and has stard bitn and im worried he will do it on a young child plz help as i dont 2 get rid of him
I don’t know, but most puppies love to bite, just don’t let it bite your limbs, juts give them a toy. I think its just teething.
i have a husky/part wolf, he is a very friendly dog to kids, but he don’t like other people, he has bit my wife, not hard, but to let her know to back off
hello
my name is sarah, i am from the UK and just purchased a husky pup of 11wks. He keeps nipping when playing and chewing things. I hold his jaw shut and giv him a firm no, he is learning. It is never to early to start training a husky, if you start too late you will end up with a realy stubborn dog. I am trying to house train him at the minute. When he goes and does his business in the rite place i say he is a good boy and giv him a biscuit if he doesnt he gets told no and put where he should do it. He learning slowly now though. I suggest before you consider buying a husky you really need to do your homework they can be hard work.

Will our huskie ever get along with our two male(meutered) Chi’s who were here first? The Husky is a stray…..
I dont believe that these dogs are that mean. My mother has a full breed siberian husky who is 3 yrs old. My mother has 14 grandchildren the dogs love all of them. He even allows the young ones who are between 1 an 3 yrs of age to lay on him. Altho he is very protective of my mother he is friendly to almost everyone who comes around. An i think if raised with young child and other animals when the are a pup helps as well cuz she has several other animals including cats and he plays with them.
We have a 3 year old husky cross and 2 children 2.5 years old and 1 year old and if anything she is very protective of them. She is the sweetest dog I have ever seen / raised. We got her from SPCA so we don;t know what her other breed is, but she looks very husky. We got her when she was 7 months old and our son was 3 months old, but she has exepted him from the start. She is also very good with other dogs, off leash as well.
I have a sable and white siberian husky,(gramma might have been a siberian wolf/husky hybrid) with ice blue eyes, had her for for 5 months, raised well, she is a jewel of a dog, everyone including dogs, strangers, cats, grandkids are her best friends.. never growled or was aggressive to anyone except the fun “growltalk/wolftalk” to me.. beautiful girl.. She protects my my grandkids including the mean one.. took a while for her to bond with us, they are are a very devoted breed but knew that going in..
I have a 4 year old husky that loves to play. He is not aggressive in any way but appears that way because of his size.. If you are going to own a husky, you better be able to take him for long hikes at least once a week otherwise he gets bored. I have 1 other dog and two cats. I had 3 cats until the husky decided she was a playtoy. That cat is now dead but the husky didn’t mean to hurt her, it was just that he was to big for her to play with. I would be careful with animals or humans that are smaller than them because they are so strong but they do not mean any harm
I just got a stray husky and have given him away but he keeps coming back-claims of biting. I find him very friendly but humps everyone. My dogs, me, my friends, I just can’t find him a permanent home, in the meantime he lives with 7 ducks and a goose and doesn’t pay any attention to them.
I have a husky lab mix and he is a good dog except for the fact that he gets things and when you try to take it away he tries to bite and its not a play bite.he has bitten our daughter and Im going to have to take him to SPCA…I dont know why he does this…
I have a male husky that is 4 yrs and i have noticed recently that when fed fish he does not eat it he just takes it out of the dish and rubs his face on the fish has this happend to any of your huskys? and would love to know why? Thx
my sister loves huskies. we have a great pyrenees, i typed in wolves and this is what it gave me so im gonna write my opinion on wolves. THEY NEED 2 BE SHOT!!!!!! THERS TO MANY OF THEM!!!!!!THERE EATIN ALL THE DEAR AND ELK. THERE NOT EVEN NICE ABOUT IT. THEY KILL THEM AND LEAVE THEM OR THEY JUST ATACK THEM AND LEAVE THEM TO SUFFER thats why i got a great pyrenees so he can KILL them!!
these dogs are nice. i love them
How can a breed of dog bred to WORK WITH OTHER DOGS, not be suitable with other dogs?
This is not true at all. I’ve seen and visited many kennels that work their Siberian Huskies in harness and 1: they are fine with each other 2: any aggression towards one another is not tolerated! you can’t pull a sled if your fighting.
my own is fine with ALL dogs, including smaller breeds. sibes ARE highly prey driven and should not be left unsupervised with small animals, including small dogs.
Also the breed should not have any aggression issues, they were bred to not only work and help the Chukchi people, but to keep their children warm at night. A dog not good with children would not be able to do that. They are full of energy and can easily knock over a small child, but you should ALWAYS supervise dogs and children, no matter how much you trust them.
Beautiful photos, but more research should have been done on the breed.
i have a husky and i got it from the pound like at 4 days ago its 6years and i have a lab mix with pit and they are always finding and being aggressive towards each other is that normal??
We have a 4 Yr. old Husky. She is a real good girl, however she has been diagnosed with separation anx. I can’t understand why as I am not working. I do have days when I’m in & out all day. She will lick herself in different areas until she has sore spots. We have no children at home and no other pets. This can get costly having to take her to the vet because she’s licked herself raw. Any ideas, as we love her and don’t know how to help her. We have a small house and thought about getting a smaller dog for company. Please help us keep our Husky. Thanks
Hiya, I’ve a male husky, nearly 2 years old.. Had a similar behavioural problem.. Heartbreaking.. But eventually managed to cure !! What worked for us , took a while and lots of patience.. Started by putting him in another room for a few minutes, shutting the door, when he was quiet (in your case not long enough to lick incessantly) opened the door allowing access to the room I was in.. Never made a fuss of him either placing in the room or allowing him back in.. Changed the times of day too. After doing this for about a week in one room, tried another and so forth.. Eventually lengthening the amount of time he was in a room.. Used the same principal leaving the house, left the house for a few minutes, waited outside, when quiet returned, gradually built up the time before returning.. He is now happy to be left, no longer soils or gets stressed out or destructive.. He has learnt it is ok to be alone and that I will always return.. Don’t give up,it’s just breaking the association cycle, the end result is so worth the wait
.. Good Luck
Thanks for the info Sharon, I appreciate it.
Hi,
We had a husky cross that had separation anxiety though not to the extent of yours. Like Sharon, we started by leaving her for short periods of time and standing outside, then gradually lengthening it. We also hid treats around the place so she had something else to focus on when we were gone. To start, we’d show her the treats, take her into another room and hide the treats. Then let her out and ‘help’ her find them. Once she got the idea that treats were there to be found, we started to do it before we left. In no time she started associating us leaving with a good thing: treats being hidden. If you choose really tough places it can take your dogs a long time to find them all (but make sure it’s not where your dog will do damage to get them), she was much better about leaving.
Thanks Alison, I’ve been doing that and it has helped alot, a big thank you to both you and Sharon for the helpful hints. Josie is a wonderful dog. The extent of her bad behavior now is tearing up a kleenex or paper towel if left laying around. We snicker and make a big deal out of it as we can surly live with an occational torn kleenex. Take care, Brenda
My new husband has a 10 yr old husky who has adopted me. Last evening, there were fireworks outside which upset the dog. He tried to get in the chair with me, which was tight, so I got on the floor at its base. “Klonie” put his his paws on my shoulders and his head on one side. My question is was he frightened or was he trying to protect me? My husband said he the dog has always been afraid of thunder storms and fireworks/gun shot sounds. He sleeps on my side of the bed. I just love this dog.
I have a 7 month old male Husky and plan on getting a play buddy for him from the same breeder. Any advice on a partner? Male or Female? Max has been neutered and I plan the same for his new play buddy.
Thanks
I have 2 husky crosses, 1 1/2 years old. They are male and female littermates. I don’t think the gender matters, especially if you’re going have them fixed. I also think you’re smart getting them a few months apart. It was a bit of a handful having 2 at once. Interestingly, the female who is quite a bit smaller is the dominant one. Someone above mentioned that huskies have a strong need for hierarchy and that’s certainly right for these two, both among themselves and with my partner and I. Luckily, we had good advice when we got them and made sure we established our “dominance” by making them sit and wait for their food and an open door, among other things. Good luck and enjoy your new dog!
I have a huskey crossed with a beagle and he is great with kids. he looks just like a huskey except with his ears are like a beagles. He is great with kids other dogs and he loves people. He weighs 50 lbs. and has the brown eyes. People sometimes look at him and say he looks like a wolf and many do looking at huskies. Our family and grandkids love him and we will never find as good a dog as he is.
i have a 6month old husky that i am trying to put in the backyard with my 1 year old irish setter but every time they get around each other its like they want to rip each other apart. i didnt think that huskies were that aggressive. my other dog is not aggressive at all. he gets along great with my wifes schitzu, so i dont understand why he is so aggressive towards the other one. is it because they are both males? any help would be appreciated
I had my husky pup (Shadow) for almost 2 months now we also got an Yorkie Terrier (Levert) and a Shorkie (Gerald) around the same times also with 2 little kittens Mo’Mo and Simba they all play together all day long it’s not the dog fault about his action but the person who raise it Shadow is a well behave husky not to mention he lives with to young children Antinette 6 and Stephan 9 in 2 weeks he gets alone with them great.
I have a stunning 6 month old husky male who loves to play and run and will run 5/6 miles already with running belt and harness 3 times a week plus 3 daily large walks per day off the leash .He shows no sign of distress with this amount of exercise and has working stock in his mother & father. My only concern is that he plays great with my kids but at times , especially feeding time he seems to growl if they go near him and his front lip rises . I supervise all the time and he has never bitt or attacked , when i am around he totally ignores the kids and only gives myself attention .He is very fond and affectionate to my wife but will ignore the kids outwith play time.He loves playing footi with them and believe it or not on the trampoline in back yard.We got him from 8 weeks old and has been the centre of my families attention from day one although my 3 year old can be tough on him but i have noticed that when i am around and the kids clap him he lowers his head and gives a slight growl but never attacks.I have always checked him and try to encourage my 8 year old to feed him and remove his bowl and brush his teeth .
Does anyone have any idea why he growls at them .
I live in the UK and Akino is my first dog .
Any tips would be appreciated.
i have a husly at home and when we got her she was only 4 weeks old cuz the guy tht gave it to us was leaving to go work outta town and our cat decided whenever we were sleeping to attacked her but once she got rly big he gave up cuz he realized holy crap shes bigger then me and before we put the cat to sleep they were best friends they kept playing together
i love you husky
i’ve always wanted a husky , my aunt has a husky chow mix named tuffy .. but let me tell you , she’s such a wuss ! she’s the nicest thing you’ll ever meet , and biggest too . i know huskies need a lot of training , but if you breed them with another dog can it be easier for you to train them ?
so our husky Josie decided to kill a skunk while we were on vacation. Had someone house and dog sitting for us, don’t know if they’ll want to take that on again. What a job trying to de-skunk the house and dog although they did a pretty good job. When we came home you could still smell it some but it wasn’t too bad. That now makes her kills a duck, squirrel, many rabbits (her fav.), birds and now a skunk, what to do with that girl. We want to get another dog to keep her company but are a bit nervious as we wanted to get a smaller dog, hope she will do ok with that.
we just got a siberian husky pup, and 2 baby kittens. he is great with the kittens, and great with children. i think temperaments are a great guideline, but ultimately your dog is reflection of yourself and it’s surroundings. your dog will remind you when you are out of balance. dogs are angels with paws instead of wings
I have a 12 week old and so clever too,she learns very fast but when it comes to giving a snack or her food she grabs it from my hand, bites my hand. How can i control her to not bite but take it in gentle manner?Any Comments will be appreciated on anything, that we need to know.Thx
hi, please help… i have 2 husky boys both 8 months old brothers, had them since they were pups. I have 2 female dogs 1 husky, 1 crossbreed. The 2 boys have recently started having dog fights,. For no reason that i can see, one of the boys will just start growling at the other. mostly the one who started the growling first will eventually walk away because the other dog wont fight back, but on a few occassions he has and its really scary. there has been a couple of dog cuts when this has happened. When the growling first starts i try to correct them but it makes it 10 times worst and they end up fighting! Is this a dominance thing? i dont want to have to rehome a male, but dont know what to do??? any help please.
